I had quick oats instead of the regular kind for breakfast this morning. They were inferior. I was disappointed. Now, don't get me wrong --- they weren't as foul as instant oatmeal, but then again, what is? (I think that's a rhetorical question, rather than a call for all y'all reading this to list off things that are disgusting.)

Every morning there's a halo hanging on the corner of my girlfriend's four post bed...

Wait, wrong song... oh, thanks a lot...

Ack! Perhaps I wasn't clear enough: that was just a rhetorical question, not a call for people to list disgusting things! Dangit, now it's gonna be in my head! Ack!

Do those lose their flavor?

i kind of like instant oatmeal sometimes, but wonder why it exists since it only takes a copuple of minutes the regular way.

5 minutes is 4.5 minutes too many

I've decided that quick oats are just silly. Instant oats are useful on camping trips, but that's about it. Quick oats (the ones that only take a minute or whatever) are silly because the regular kind only take a few minutes and taste way better (also they have texture instead of sticky pastiness).

And, apparently you want your oats tasting and feeling like paste. Icky.

also, you can make less-icky instant oatmeal by putting regular oatmeal, water, and a little milk together in the microwave for a minute.

I have quick oats around for those times when I crave uncooked oats. It may sound odd, but oats + honey + a spot of milk (or oats + a spoonful of peanut butter + honey + a spot of milk) makes a yummy quick breakfast. Sometimes I even use them to make an uninspired muesli mix.

But for making oatmeal, or porridge as I like to call if (with a snotty accent), the regular kind reigns supreme.

I know this "craving for uncooked oats" of which you speak. It always makes me feel like I'm a horse or something, though. We inherited these quick oats from a friend who was out of town for the summer, but now that I've (re)confirmed their unsuitability for making oatmeal ("porridge"! hee! we've disappointed at least one Brit with the revelation that they're the same thing) I'm going to use them up in baking. Oh, darn, an excuse to make oatmeal-raisin cookies? Whatever shall I do?

How long do non-quick oats take to prepare?

"Regular" oats (i.e. rolled oats, the kind usually sold as oatmeal everywhere) take maybe five minutes (ten minutes absolutely tops), depending on how much water you use, and how done you want them to be. Steel-cut oats, which are sometimes sold as "Irish oats", take half an hour but are oh so worth it when you have time. Yum. "Quick" or "minute" oats take a minute, and instant oats are instant plus the time it took you to heat the water, but they just aren't as good (especially the instant ones, with the exception of on camping trips, when they are a great way to get warm food and liquid into your body first thing in the morning when you need them most).
