...at least for me and my freaky, nefarious purposes.

I'm thinking a Doc Marten boot (possibly steel-toed) with Birkenstock insoles. Ooooh. It feels a little perverse, mixing punk and hippie style like that, but I think it could potentially totally rock my world, or at least my feet, which as usual are a little sore after a long day (more on that in a bit --- first, more on the shoes).

What gave me the idea, or why am I bringing this up now? Well, the Birkenstock store in Eugene is having a sale, and I was thinking of going to check it out, but of course I started out by doing a little research online, which led me to the insoles and arch supports section of the Birkenstock online catalog. A few months back (and I had to search through my old entries for about half an hour to find that link), I speculated that Docs with insoles might be the ultimate in work shoes, and now this idea. Oh me oh my.

Ok, now I am distracted by talking to pants_of_doom on IM (she says I'm a freak, but the shoes are not her only data point for this conclusion) so I'll rant about the work stuff later.

Weren't Docs originally designed to be comfortable work shoes, even without extra insoles? Whether or not they succeed at this is perhaps a different issue... But before Docs got coopted by various subcultures, I thought the idea was to create a shoe/boot for the Working Man that didn't suck?

That sounds vaguely familiar, and they've got the super-rad patented "everything-resistant" soles... but my feet hurt more if I wear them to work than, say, my hiking boots (which have spiffy good-for-my-feet insoles in them). Likewise, I've really kicked my feet's ass (what mixed metaphor?) by wearing Docs to a concert when I should've gone with sneakers or something better suited for bouncing around in. So yeah, the "whether they succeed" debate rages on, at least for me, because they're pretty darn comfy in most ways, but my aching heels say "give us some padding already, wench!" and I hear and must obey them.

Birkenstock has an entire line of clogs intendended for the food service and medical industries (ie places that you need closed toed shoes that are comfy enough to stand in for 10 hours). They basically are the normal clogs with a non-permeable outsole. Pretty spendy as I recall though.

My coworker Lisa swears by the Birkenstock chef clogs. You can actually take out their insoles and put the entire shoe in the dishwasher when they get grody. Spendy or not, I'd get them, except I think I want something with a little more ankle support. Also, I have a great gift for stepping out of clogs, which I think would be most unfortunate at work.
