Try it with rice!

So every time we make Indian food what gets stuck in my head but that Simpsons episode where Apu invites Marge and Homer over for dinner. Marge compliments Manjula's cooking, and asks what's in a certain dish. She replies, "Lentils, chickpeas, and rice."

"How about this one?" asks Marge.

"Lentils and chickpeas," says Manjula. "Try it with rice."

Mmmmmm.... Last night I flaked out on making wasabi mashed potatoes again, so instead Peter learned how to make chana dal (yellow split pea/lentil stew of oh so yummy goodness). It was delicious on rice with yogurt and raisins. Yay for brown gack!

"try it with rice" sounds very funny.

are sooooo yummy! I posted a link to the recipe in my March 6 entry, I think. The one about me being my cat's bitch.

I think part of the problem is there are roughly a billion bean type things that no one knows the English word for, so "lentils" wprks well since with all the spices its not like you can tell the difference ;-)

p.s. chana-dal works really well with rice with cumin seeds(jeeru) in it.

Oooh. Rice with cumin seeds does sound very yummy. I'll have to try it some time. I bet our friendly local hippie food store has cumin seeds in bulk. And if they don't, I'll check out the Asian market again. It's very exciting there, to the point of being a bit overwhelming --- sometimes I have to read the labels in French or Dutch because there's no English and I can't even identify what language the authentic script represents. Also, thinking of the Asian market reminds me that you're so right about the millions of bean type things that no one knows the name for. And that's even before you start getting into the permutations of spice combinations! Mmmmmm....
