I really liked Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. A lot.

That is all. I will now return to my relatively low-internet life. The one where I own a house (wheee!) and go to fun movies (yay!)

You liked Sky Captain? The previews make it look so... bad! I wasn't planning on going to see it, but maybe I will have to rethink...

What's greatest about Sky Captain is how it's oozing with geek love. The guy originally behind the movie has been working on it on his home computer since like the 80s. That bit where the zeppelin docks at the Empire State Building? Totally started on a home computer way before there was any kind of good CGI technology. Eventually somebody saw it and passed it to somebody else who passed it on and so on until somebody in Hollywood fell in love with it and said "Yes! I will lavish money on this project and making it get made!" If you're at all into vaguely Golden Age entertainment, like old skool comic books and pulp novels and the movies and radio shows they inspired, then I extra bonus recommend Sky Captain. If you like Jude Law at all, I highly recommend this movie --- he and Sadie Frost (his ex, I think?) are the producers on this film, and I think their interest has a lot to do with why the movie didn't stay the home project it started out as, but clearly they fell in nerd love with it and made the movie happen with stacks of money and Hollywood connections and whatnot. Also, I actually enjoyed Angelina Jolie in this movie, which I haven't been able to say about her since, um, Girl, Interrupted was the last time I think. She, along with Jude Law, looks like she's having all the fun. Actors that look like they're having fun are my favorite. The retro-futuristic look and feel of the movie are just great, even beautiful to look at in a lot of places, and then there's the computer-resurrected ghost of Sir Laurence Olivier. I can't make this stuff up. See a matinee if you still doubt the movie's awesomeness, but see it. So fun!

two more thumbs up.
