I'm all sneezy and allergic and Julia Child is dead, just days short of what would've been her 92nd birthday, but I'm hoping that's all the badness the traditionally unlucky day has in store, mmkay?

Man. Julia Child. I feel like I should be cooking something very rich and excessively French (preferably involving lots of butter and sweet vermouth) in her honor. Ideas, anyone?

Coq au vin, if you're using red wine (for which sweet vermouth is a pretty good cheap substitute) and chicken fricassee if you're using white wine. Coq au vin is pretty tasty... hmmm.

that's the one! I've always wanted to make it with red wine...maybe I'll have to this weekend in honor of Kevin...(and Julia, of course).

This recipe looks pretty okay. But Pava's got me all obsessed with chicken marsala now... and maybe I'll break my no-beef rule just this once and make a real French onion soup. Hmmm. Do I have ovenproof bowls so I can do the cheesy goodness topping? Hmmmm....

We make a damn good vegetarian "french onion" soup. It's got some tomato and rosemary in it, but what really makes it good is the stale and toasted baguette slices and mountains of cheese that get all bubbly in the toaster-oven broiler. Let me tell you, individual soup crocks are always a good investment.

The toaster oven broiler! That hadn't even occurred to me! Thank you, Liz! (It's much too hot to fire up the oven around here.)

And port and sherry. Can't forget the port and sherry.

Chicken marsala is basically coq au vin made with port instead of red wine, and I might like it even better... hmmm.
