More bullet points
This time, with less good news.
A little quote from Inga Muscio (author of the classic Third Wave feminism for Second Wavers text Cunt and I think this is actually an excerpt from the afterword to the 2002 revised and expanded edition of Cunt):
What happens to people living in a society where everyone in power is lying, stealing, cheating and killing, and in our hearts we all know this, but the consequences of facing all these lies are so monstrous, we keep on hoping that maybe the corporate government administration and media are on the level with us this time.
Americans remind me of survivors of domestic violence.
There is always the hope that this is the very, very, very last time one's ribs get re-broken again.
There is another way in which this situation reminds me of domestic violence. One of the most popular tactics of an abuser is to isolate their victim from the community. The abuser belittles family, friends and neighbors until they just stop coming around.
If you read the newspapers and put together a comprehensive look at how the rest of the world feels about the U.S. right now, you will see that we are being isolated from the world in a very similar manner.
I think people in other countries are wise to this abuse tactic because all the protests I read about make a huge and formal distinction between the American people and the present corporate/presidential administration.
It seems like we should be reaching out to this community, and not allowing ourselves to be boxed in.
And speaking of the U.S. being abusive, here's a little article about how apparently our neighbors to the north are a little too respectful of people's rights and liberties, which I first spotted on
thrasymachos's journal. What the hell? I want the Onion to cover this one.
And finally, in case you hadn't heard (I just found out a few hours ago), apparently there's some hospitals (like hundreds) where med students practice doing pelvic exams on unconscious patients who haven't given permission for the procedure and are never told about it. That is so fucked up. I wanted it to be an urban myth, but Snopes didn't have anything about it and when I tried Hi Greg Rae on "nonconsensual pelvic exams", it turned up a pretty real-looking article. You can read more about this here. I'm going to do more research and maybe write about it. Eeeeeew!
And that's all my news for now. My random mp3 of the moment is Sisters of Mercy, which makes me think of pants_of_doom, since it was the default soundtrack for her car during my senior year at Mudd, when we used to hang out more. I miss those times, although not all the stress and insanity that was the academic aspect of that year, nor the loneliness of missing Peter more or less constantly.

I decided to go find that state department report. It's here if you're interested in finding out what our government thinks of the rest of the world. I downloaded it, but I daresay I won't have time to read it till friday :P so I can't say anything else about it. Will return with my thoughts then.

Contrary-wise, when I had my eye surgery last year they let me wear pajama bottoms, although they tied me down (the bastards) during surgery. They told me people get up and try and walk away or hit the doctors in surgery if they don't. I didn't believe them until the middle of the surgery, when suddenly I found myself quite in touch wih my smacking hand.
